Nikki Gamble says 'Our team of consultants and teacher reviewers have selected some great new titles which can be read in guided reading or for whole class read aloud sessions. They have been chosen for the quality of language, themes and subject, which give scope for you to teach comprehension strategies through dialogue and discussion. The National Curriculum recognises the importance of vocabulary for developing comprehension and it is vital that children encounter new words in rich, meaningful texts. These books will provide powerful, thought provoking, reflective and delightful reading experiences which will develop reading for pleasure and comprehension'.
The National Curriculum states: ‘Comprehension skills develop through pupils’ experience of high-quality discussion with the teacher, as well as from reading and discussing a range of stories, poems and non-fiction. All pupils must be encouraged to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to develop their knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live, to establish an appreciation and love of reading, and to gain knowledge across the curriculum. Reading widely and often increases pupils’ vocabulary because they encounter words they would rarely hear or use in everyday speech. Reading also feeds pupils’ imagination and opens up a treasure-house of wonder and joy for curious young minds.'
Our group and guided reading selections include short fiction, picture book fiction, poetry, wordless books and quality non-fiction, providing a rich and varied reading experience for each year group. Some texts are accessible to all readers and some offer more challenging reading experiences.
