Anthony Browne is the recipient of the Hans Andersen Award for Illustration 2000, an international award that is given for a lifetime achievement. After graduating from Leeds College of Art in 1967, Anthony Browne worked as a medical illustrator and then designer of greetings cards. His debut as an illustrator of children’s books came in 1978 when he illustrated through the Magic Mirror. This was followed by the groundbreaking ‘A Walk in the Park’ (1979) and Bear Hunt (1979). Gorilla published in 1983 won the Greenaway Medal and established Browne as a picture book creator loved by parents, children and teachers. Browne is well known for his depiction of primates, especially Willy the chimp who appears in a series of books including Willy the Wimp, Willy’s Pictures and Willy the Dreamer. Browne’s books are characteristically allusive and the multi-layered visual narrative offers the potential for many different interpretations.
