Deep In the Forest: traditional tales (7 - 11 years)

£130 Save £43.78

This collection of 22 books takes the reader deeper into the world of traditional tales and fairy stories. It includes literary fairy tales, such as Oscar Wilde's The Selfish Giant in a stunning illustrated adaptation by Alexis Deacon and a wonderful rettling of the Aladdin story by Philip Pullman from the Thousand and One Nights. Some of the stories selected play with the conventions of story, making them particularly interesting for this age group rather than younger c'hildren. Lauren Child's, 'Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Book?',  Allan Ahlberg's 'Previously' and Philip Pullman's ' I Was a Rat' give rise to some interesting ideas that will provoke disccussion about the nature of stories, storytelling and reading. Children in Key Stage 2 are also likely to understand the finer nuances in the narrative voice of B B Wolf in Jon Scieszka's 'The True Story of the Three Little Pigs'

We have also included stories from around the world. John Steptoe's 'Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters' is a well known Cinderella type story and Arthur Ransome's classic, Old Peter's Russian Tales, includes the story of The Firebird and Baba Yaga. Marcia William's characteristic comic style retellings of tales from India and Sinbad ensure that this collection appeals to readers with a wide range of interests and abilities.

Bethan Woollvin interviewed by Madelyn Travis

Bethan Woollvin won The Macmillan Prize for illustrating in 2014 for her arresting version of Little Red Riding Hood. It is inspired by her own childhood response to the story: she didn't believe any little girl would be taken in by the wolf. After graduating from Anglia Ruskin University with a First Class Degree in Illustration, Bethan moved to London, where she continues to create extraordinary books. Bethan took some time out from her busy schedule to chat to Madelyn Travis.
