About the book: The giant lives high up on a rocky crag in the middle of a nature-rich forest and he spends his days smashing and mashing mountains and destroying the woods around him. He soon finds himself to be lonely but then one day an unexpected little yellow bird arrives and sings to him. Happy to have a companion, the giant traps the bird and takes it back to his cold cave. However, the little bird stops singing so the giant lets it go only to realize that his homeland is devoid of any other creatures or plant life. From this point on, the giant reflects on his actions and takes steps to “mend what I’ve broken”. There is no quick fix to restore what was lost but the gradual return of the flora and fauna happily sees the giant reconnecting with his little friend, yellow bird and living in harmony with his surroundings.
Reasons for Selection: With the contemporary social spotlight squarely on the fragility of our environment and the importance of wildlife conservation, the story of The Lonely Giant is an important book to share with young people as it takes conservation as its central theme. This thought-provoking fable will help to awaken and cultivate pupils’ respect for the natural world in an accessible way through its simple text and expressive illustrations. Other themes of friendship, freedom and personal power are explored in the softly-drawn illustrations, and the element of repetition in the visual and written structure of the story signposts important developments in the narrative.
