About the Book

The sun rises over the rainforest and a new day begins on our blue planet. A young spider monkey starts the day with his troop but quickly becomes separated from his mother. Throughout the day he searches for her, discovering new areas of the forest, and meeting lots of its inhabitants. As dusk falls, he is finally reunited with his mother, just in time to save him from the jaws of a jaguar! This character-driven, nonfiction book is beautifully illustrated and keeps readers engaged to the very last page.

Reasons for Selection

One Day on Our Blue Planet… In the Rainforest is an excellent introduction for nonfiction books told in a narrative style. The book offers lots of opportunities to discuss the wider world, but also follows a clear plot, in which a small monkey becomes separated from its mother. This suspenseful key event is easy to relate to and helps young children to engage with the factual information contained within. The text and illustrations point out similarities and differences in animals, habitats and times of day, honing observational skills and linking well to the science curriculum for Year 1. Children can learn to recognise, understand and use the comparative and prepositional language in information writing. The illustrations are striking and allow for discussion of the use of colour, size and layout on the page. The vocabulary used is unfamiliar enough to challenge young readers without being obscure.
