Just Imagine

Online Course: Teaching Reading at KS2 (9 sessions)

This online course is based on our face-to-face training but adapted for online delivery. This course is devised and delivered by Nikki Gamble, co-author of Guiding Readers: layers of meaning (winner of the UKLA Academic Book of the Year Award 2016) and Exploring Children's Literature (4th edition, 2019).

The course is delivered by Nikki Gamble and Just Imagine consultants.

How do you ensure that children are active learners and are both emotionally and cognitively engaged in their learning?
How does research inform your choices in teaching English?
Are you introducing pupils to high-quality texts that broaden children’s reading interests and provoke curiosity?
Can everyone confidently answer the question ‘Why are you doing this?’

This course examines a broad range of reading skills covering comprehension and inference making, fluency, vocabulary
and language study. Central to our approach is high-quality discussion and dialogic teaching.

Evidence bears out the efficacy of these approaches. The EEF writes ‘Overall, studies of oral language interventions consistently show a positive impact on learning, including on oral language skills and reading comprehension.’ Teachers have consistently reported this as a strength in our resource for schools, Take One Book. Although this course is designed to work independently of Take One Book, the underpinning research and application are consistent with the Take One Book teaching framework.
