The books selected for guided reading in Key Stage One are intended to develop deeper understanding of text. Our selection is not driven by phonic decodability (our book banded selections are) and these are not books we would necessarily expect children to be able to read independently. There are different ways of approaching guided reading in Key Stage One and it is important to keep the reading needs of the children at the front of your mind when planning. These are books that can be used with the majority of children but using different approaches, e.g. reading aloud to the group, or paired reading, mixed ability groups. We have indicated where a book is more challenging which will help you select texts to use with groups of children working at Greater Depth. Accessible texts may be more suitable for children who may not be working at the expected level for their age.
Delightful and witty, this is a simple story of mistaken identity! Peter and Paul are the best of friends, but when Peter gets lost in a terrible storm he can't find Paul anywhere. With the help of a big blue whale Puffin Peter sets off to find him. They find all kinds of birds that match Peter's description but none of them is quite like Paul.
