Just Imagine

Teaching Reading at KS1

This online course is based on our face-to-face training but adapted for online delivery.

The course is delivered by Sam Keeley and Just Imagine consultants.

  • How do you ensure that children are active learners and are both emotionally and cognitively engaged in their learning?
  • How does research inform your choices in teaching reading?
  • Are you introducing pupils to high-quality texts that broaden children’s reading interests and provoke curiosity?
  • Is there a balance between teaching reading skills and developing deeper understanding and response?

This course examines a broad range of reading skills covering comprehension and inference making, fluency, vocabulary and the application of phonics in a literature-rich curriculum. Central to our approach is high-quality dialogue with individual readers, groups and the class.

Evidence bears out the efficacy of these approaches. The EEF writes ‘Overall, studies of oral language interventions consistently show a positive impact on learning, including on oral language skills and reading comprehension.’ Teachers have consistently reported this as a strength in our resource for schools, Take One Book. Although this course is designed to work independently of Take One Book, the underpinning research and application are consistent with the Take One Book teaching framework.
