Just Imagine

Steadfast Tin Soldier, The by Hans Christian Andersen (group set, 7 books)

About the book: A boy is given a set of tin soldiers for his birthday who are identical except for one who stands on one leg only. His time in the house is brief but long enough for him to fall in love with a beautiful ballerina. Disaster strikes when he falls, or perhaps is pushed, out of the window. This literary fairy tale follows his trials and tribulations as he meets peril on his journey back to the ballerina. What happens next is unexpected and will challenge the reader’s ideas of fairy tale characters living happily ever after.

Reasons for selection: Hans Christian Andersen wrote stories for all ages and his tales can be interpreted on different levels. This translation by Naomi Lewis retains Andersen’s style and challenges the reader through its style and use of vocabulary. The illustrations reflect the tone of the story and convey mood and atmosphere effectively.
