About the book: Town is by the Sea takes the reader on a poetic and visual journey into the world of a young boy from a 1950’s mining community in Canada. The boy’s experiences are framed by the constant presence of the sea and the reminder that his father is already at work beneath it. Whilst the boy plays, eats and does chores for his mother, we see him positioned in a vast open landscape where the expansive ocean is always visible, and we share his sense of freedom. Town is By the Sea is the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal winner 2018.
Reasons for selection: A deceptively simple text, this book introduces social and cultural history which will be unfamiliar to many children. It affords the opportunity to discuss profound themes around work, freedom, play, family, culture and tradition. The text is non-didactic and has plenty of ‘readerly spaces’ for children to insert their own thoughts and opinions. The illustrations invite speculation and the poetic text, with it’s comforting rhythm offers scope for study of language structure.
