About the book: Idris has spent his whole life in a refugee camp. One evening a wisp lands at his feet. He follows its path to an old man whose eyes were dulled long ago. Picking up the Wisp released memories and gradually the Wisp brings hope to the camp with the power of stories from happier times. Idris however has no memories to share but he discovers the promise of a brighter future.
Reasons for selection: Wisp tells a story that is relevant right now but has timeless themes of hope and the power of memory. Zana Fraillon’s language is inventive, poetic and playful and open to multiple interpretations. Graham Baker-Smith brings another dimension to the story with his rich allusive illustrations. The plight of refugees is explored in a way that will develop empathy in young readers.
